  2. Appreciating you sir, none of my friends has ever volunteered to teach me the process of consecrating the shells. One has even held on to the shells I gave her to consecrate for me a long time ago. She said she had to look for special water for washing the shells and even she was too busy. By this time yesterday,I was with another friend, a diviner. She even did some reading for me but didn’t tell me how I could consecrate the shells on my own. She suggested I travelled to attend Osun festival in Osogbo for more involvement (initiation)
I have 16 consecrated shells but have made up my mind not to use them for your tutorials. My friends don’t want me to know the process of divination. Probably they think, they will not be seeing more of me.

  4. Veronique, sadly Olorishas and Babalawos often don’t want the Ogberi (“Aleyo” in Lucumi) to know how incredibly simple and basic most things on our (on any) spiritual path are.

I am aware that the following is a strong generalization, yet it contains an essential truth: the more complicated a ritual is made to look, the more it indicates that the priests performing it use it as a smoke screen to hide their lack of competence, knowledge and ashé. This is not always the case – every now and then an elaborate ritual can be plain FUN of course, and fun during rituals can raise the ashé to a higher level. But generally speaking… when people behave mysterious and secretive about simple stuff like consecrating a bunch of seashells, it’s time to wave goodbye to them and go look for someone who knows their job.

In fact, your statement “My friends don’t want me to know the process of divination” sums it all up quite nicely. When somebody doesn’t want you to know such elementary things, it’s clear that they want to protect something… and believe me: their secrecy is not for your “protection” but for theirs.

Communicating with Spirit is your birthright, and signs “No access” are completely out of place. If anybody tries to prevent you from exploring the joys and magic of the universe by hollering: “You can’t go there!” simply answer: “I can walk anywhere I like. This is the universe – it’s my home”.
